CITATION

Brahim Benmokrane, Professor at University of Sherbrooke (Quebec, Canada), is an internationally renowned leader on the innovative use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials in construction. His pioneering research has produced ways to use fiberglass, and carbon-fiber composites to replace steel as reinforcement in concrete structures, thereby eliminating the deterioration and damage of urban infrastructure through corrosion. Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and recipient of the Natural Science and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC) Synergy Award for Innovation and the Canadian Standard Association (CSA) Medal of Merit, Dr. Benmokrane has developed innovative FRP reinforcing bars which are used worldwide by the construction industry to reinforce concrete structures. Professor Benmokrane is in demand worldwide as lecturer for seminars, workshops, and short courses to the profession and at academic institutions.

o   Fellow – International Institute for FRP in Construction. The recognition of a small subset of the IIFC membership as Fellows is a distinct honor for “senior members of the International Institute for FRP in Construction who have achieved a position of high responsibility and have contributed significantly to the advancement of the field through research or practice, or both”, 2010.

o   ADRIQ Award for Innovation & Technology Partnerships Quebec Association for Development, Research, and Innovation (ADRIQ). Awarded to a candidate from university who has successfully collaborated in the development of a new product as part of a research-and-development program with industry, who then assured its commercialization, 2010.

o   NSERC-Senior Industrial Research Chair in Innovative FRP Reinforcement for Concrete Infrastructure (3rd five-year term) Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. The NSERC-Senior Industrial Chairs are awarded to distinguished senior researchers of international stature who can bring an innovative perspective to the university in carrying out and managing research and in training researchers. They must be recognized as international leaders in their fields and must be considered to be exceptional in comparison to their research peers. This NSERC-Senior Industrial Chair was originally awarded in 2000 for the initial five-year term (2000–2005), then was renewed for a second five-year term (2005–2010) and a third five-year term (current term: 2010–2015).

o   Director of the Quebec-FQRNT Research Centre on Concrete Infrastructure – Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies. This research centre comprises 30 principal investigators and around 250 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from the following six Quebec universities: McGill, Concordia, Sherbrooke, Laval, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, and École Polytechnique de Montréal, 2010-Present.

o   Tier-1 Canada Research Chair in Advanced Composite Materials for Civil Structures – Tenable for seven years and renewable, these research chairs are for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. Pr. Benmokrane is one of the few Canadian researchers holding both a Tier-1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) and an NSERC Research Chair (less than 15 researchers), 2009-2016.

o   P.L. Pratley Award – Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE). Awarded annually for the best paper on bridge engineering. o   Chair: Canadian Standard Association, CSA committee S808 on Specification for Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP), (2012-  ). Prepares the technical information on fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) wet-layup composite systems, pre-cured FRP plates, and FRP bars bonded externally as structural strengthening materials for structures under the new CSA S808 standard: “Specification for Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP) Materials for Externally Reinforced Structures”. This new standard was developed by the committee and formally approved by CSA on September 29, 2014. It will be available for sale by mid-October 2014.

o   Chair: Canadian Standard Association, CSA committee S807 on Specifications for Fibre Reinforced Polymers (new standard), (2008-  ). Prepares the technical information on fibre-reinforced polymers as internal reinforcement for concrete for the new CSA S807 standard on “Specification for Fibre-Reinforced Polymers”. This standard was developed and published by CSA in May 2010 (CSA S807-10). It represented the world’s first standard on specifications for fibre-reinforced-polymer bars.
